a celebration of composer Pauline Oliveros’ 80thbirthday

One of the most delightful birthday celebrations that I have experienced!

The Music Department at Drew University will sponsor the international virtual music organization Avatar Orchestra Metaverse performing online in Second Life in a celebration of composer Pauline Oliveros’ 80thbirthday.
Oliveros will be present in person together with author/playwright/filmmaker/spoken word artist  Ione to participate in a mixed-reality performance featuring the Singing Masks of Drew professor Norman Lowrey, new virtual instruments he has created, and new works composed especially for this occasion by other members of the Avatar Orchestra.
Date: Friday, April 20.
Time: 4:00 pm (to accommodate the 9-hour time zone spread of members of the Avatar Orchestra).
Place: The Concert Hall at Drew University.
A reception will follow the program.
Free and open to the public.

Ione and I arrived in the concert hall at Drew University where Norman Lowrey is chair of the Music Department. His students were busily preparing the tech for A Birthday Celebration. Ione and I were to perform live on stage for part of it while also hanging out in Second Life with the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse (AOM). Norman aka North Zipper in AOM had prepared a beautiful set consisting of a circle of flats with poster photos - performance shots of me. AOM were all performing samples of my accordion playing from Crone Music in  a lovely remix. Each avatar had an accordion hud. This was an ultimate narcissistic experience for me!

Three other AOM composers Viv Corringham aka Zonzo Spyker, Tina Pearson aka Humming Pera and Björn Erikson also composed pieces for the celebration.  Each piece unique and expressive of loving feelings captivated me. My work with AOM since 2007 presented with increasing community and joyful exchanges and collaborations. This delightful celebration will stay with me musically and spiritually.

I spent the afternoon rehearsing with the musicians for the concert. That is a pleasure - to be rehearsing musicians performing my pieces. The program consisted of Four Meditations for Orchestra, Inner/Outer Sound Matrix, Thirteen Changes and Double X.
